A male passenger on a Mumbai-Bengaluru SpiceJet flight was trapped inside the aircraft’s toilet for more than an hour on Tuesday due to a malfunction in the door lock. The passenger was eventually rescued after the flight landed at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and engineers broke open the door.
SpiceJet issued a statement confirming the incident and apologized for the inconvenience caused, saying it would provide a full refund to the passenger.
According to KIA sources, the incident took place on Flight SG-268, which took off from Mumbai airport at 2 am on Tuesday. As soon as the flight took off, a passenger from seat no 14D went to the toilet but could not step out as the door failed to open, sources said. The crew and other passengers tried to help open the door from outside but failed in their attempts.
With the passenger panicking, the crew slid a note under the door. “Sir we tried our best to open the door, however, we could not. Do not panic. We are landing in a few minutes, so please close the commode lid and sit on it and secure yourself. As soon as the main door is open, an engineer will come,” a note penned by one of the air hostesses said.
The crew advised the passenger to sit on the commode and securing himself ahead of landing by slipping in a note.
When the flight landed in Bengaluru at around 3.42 am, the engineers boarded the plane and broke open the door, rescuing the passenger.
“On 16 January, a passenger unfortunately got stuck inside the lavatory for about an hour on SpiceJet flight operating from Mumbai to Bengaluru, while the aircraft was airborne due to a malfunction in the door lock. Throughout the journey, our crew provided assistance and guidance to the passenger. Upon arrival, an engineer opened the lavatory door, and the passenger received immediate medical support,” SpiceJet said in a statement. “SpiceJet regrets and apologizes for the inconvenience caused to the passenger. The passenger is being provided a full refund,” it added.
