By The Daily Bharat Cricket Express (Digital-Desk): In a spectacular display of cricketing prowess, India’s women’s cricket team secured a historic victory over England in the one-off Test match in Mumbai on Saturday, dominating the proceedings and winning by an impressive margin of 347 runs. The comprehensive win was marked by stellar performances from both the bat and the ball, underscoring India’s dominance in the longer format of the game.
The India women’s cricket team created history on 16th, December, Saturday, setting up the biggest target in the history of women’s Test cricket. India declared on their overnight score of 186/6 vs England, setting up a target of 479 runs in Mumbai. The mammoth target was attained by India after their impressive show in the first innings of the match and then a superb bowling effort on Day 2.
India hit 428 runs in the first innings, courtesy of half-centuries from Satheesh Shubha, Jemimah Rodrigues, Yastika Bhatia and Deepti Sharma. Coming into bowl, India ran riot against the England batters, bowling them out for just 136 runs. Deepti Sharma was the star of the show on Day 2, picking her maiden 5-wicket-haul for just 7 runs.
Deepti Sharma produced a match-winning performance to help India beat England by 347 runs and register the biggest-ever victory in the women’s Test. India bowled out England for 131 in the morning session of Day 3 to register their first-ever win over England women in a home Test.
After choosing to bat first on a good batting pitch, the Indian batsmen made valuable contributions on the opening day, propelling the hosts to a total exceeding 400. While no centuries were scored, there were a couple of century partnerships. In response, England Women struggled against the Indian bowlers, especially Deepti Sharma, who delivered an outstanding spell, securing a five-wicket haul. Thanks to her brilliance, India gained a substantial 292-run lead. Although there was an opportunity to enforce the follow-on, Harmanpreet decided against it. Instead, India Women added crucial runs on Day 2, setting a challenging target of 479.
“I like Test cricket very much; you get a lot of time. You can express yourselves while batting and bowling, you get plenty of time. I was having fun while batting and while bowling. Was just waiting for my turn to roll my arm. I liked all my wickets, but Ecclestone’s bowled dismissal was my favorite one. We tried to bowl in the right areas, we were having a discussion among ourselves and bowled according to our plans,” Sharma said at the start of Day 3.
India broke Sri Lanka’s long-standing record of 410-run target, which they set against Pakistan back in 1998 in their home Test match. To put things in context, the highest ever successful chase in women’s cricket is by Australia. The team chased down 198 runs against England in Sydney, 2011.
Similar to the first innings, the England batters displayed little resilience in the second innings. Pooja Vastrakar claimed three wickets, and Deepti Sharma took a four-wicket haul, leaving the England batters without answers. Deepti not only excelled with the ball but also contributed significantly with the bat, scoring 87 runs. Her outstanding all-round performance included 9 wickets in the match. The Indian team is jubilant with the victory, already posing for photographs on the sidelines.
