India is set to play in the World Cup finals on Sunday, November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Let’s look at India’s performance in the World Cup finals:
1983 against West Indies at Lord’s
Back in 1983, India played the World Cup final for the first time. The odds were against them, but Kapil Dev and Co. defied them to lift the trophy at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
After being put into bat first, India were bowled out for 183 in 54.4 overs. Kris Srikkanth and Mohinder Amarnath scored 38 and 26 respectively at the top, but hardly got any support from the others.
But with India struggling at 111 for six, Madan Lal, Syed Kirmani and Balwinder Sandhu guided their team to a respectable score.
Thereafter, India bowled West Indies out for 140 in 52 overs. Amarnath and Madan Lal picked up three wickets apiece. Barring Viv Richards, who scored 33 off 28, none of the Caribbean batters put up much of a fight.
2003 against Australia in Johannesburg
Australia beat India by 125 runs when the two teams met in the 2003 World Cup final at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Ricky Ponting made an absolute mockery of the Indian bowling attack and guided the Aussies through to their third title.
Ponting scored an unbeaten 140 off 121 balls with four fours and eight sixes. He got an efficient partner in Damien Martyn, who scored 88 runs off 84 balls with seven fours and a six. The duo put on an unbeaten partnership of 234 for the third wicket.
Earlier, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist laid the platform with a partnership of 105 in 14 overs. Gilchrist racked up 57 runs off 48 balls with eight fours and a six. Harbhajan Singh got two wickets for the Men in Blue.
Thereafter, the Aussies bowled India out for 234 in 39.2 overs. Virender Sehwag played a lone hand, scoring 82 runs off 81 balls with 10 fours and three sixes. Rahul Dravid also made 47 runs, but their efforts went in vain.
2011 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai
India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final of the 2011 World Cup at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka put up a healthy score of 274 for the loss of six wickets. Mahela Jayawardene scored 103 runs off 88 balls with 13 fours.
TM Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara made useful contributions with knocks of 33 and 48 respectively. Thisara Perera injected momentum into the innings with an unbeaten 22-run knock. Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh picked up two wickets apiece.
India lost the early wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, but Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir’s partnership of 83 runs brought them back into the contest.
Gambhir scored 97 runs off 122 balls before getting cleaned up by Thisara Perera. Later, MS Dhoni scored an unbeaten 91 off 79 balls with eight fours and two sixes, taking India past the finish line.
